The Department of Computer Science and Technology of Nanjing University is a key constructing discipline of national "211 Project", "985 Project", and one of the 11 "Top Priority" of Jiangsu Province. Our two second-level disciplines¡ª Computer Software and Theory is a national key discipline, Computer Application Technology is the key discipline of Jiangsu Province. We are entitled to the authority to award doctorate degree on the first-level discipline¡ª Computer Science and Technology, as well as a post-doctoral research station on Computer Science and Technology.

Nanjing University's computer science research started in 1958, when we established majors of computational technology, computational mathematics and mathematical logic, and thus began training professional expertise in computer-related fields. In 1978 we set up the Department of Computer Science on the basis of the three majors mentioned. In 1993 we changed our name to the Department of Computer Science and Technology. Our department had made remarkable achievements before and at the initial stage of her construction: in the 1960s, we successfully adjusted the first computer among all the colleges affiliated to the then State Ministry of Higher Education, having developed China's first advanced language compiling program; in the 1970s we presided over the research and production of homemade medium-sized computer DJS-210 and XT-1 operating system and other software systems; in the 1980s we researched and developed the first distributed system ZCZ within China, cultivated the first PhD of computer software on China mainland.

Since the beginning of our department, the discipline construction of Nanjing University's computer science has stepped into a period of rapid development, ranking at China's top level in team building, personnel training, scientific research, etc.

At present our working staff is 111 people, including 27 professors (with 24 doctoral supervisors), 31 associate professors and senior engineers. Among our faculty, there is a member of CAS, 3 national Young and Middle-aged Experts with Distinguished Contributions, 3 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 2 Chair Professors of "Cheung Kong Scholars Program"of the Ministry of Education, 6 electees of the New Century Talents Cultivation Program of Ministry of Education, one middle-aged and young expert with Distinguished Contributions to Jiangsu Province, one Distinguished Teacher of Jiangsu Province.

One of the Ten Outstanding Youth of Jiangsu Province, 2 first-rank selectees of Jiangsu Province's 333 projects, two academic leaders of the "Blue Project" of Jiangsu Province, 2 laureates of the National Youth Science and Technology Award, 1 winner of the Ministry of Education Award for Excellent Young College Teachers, 3 winners of the Ministry of Education Huo Yingdong Fund or Huo Yingdong Award, 2 laureates of the Baoshan Iron and Steel Corporation Award for Teaching, 4 awardees of the Zhongchuang Software Talent Award, 2 winners of Youth Science and Technology Award of Jiangsu Province.

The department has established an intact personnel training system from undergraduates, graduates and doctoral candidates to post-doctoral fellows, while at the same time cultivating engineering masters in the field of computer technology and software engineering. At present, there are more than 2,000 students in our department. We have also set up the Basic Teaching Section of college computer to undertake the task of teaching the Public course of computer basics to the whole university. We put much emphasis on teaching and talent training: two of our doctoral dissertations are chosen to be National Excellent Doctor Degree Dissertation; a number of teaching results won awards on provincial or ministerial level; the major "Computer Science and Technology" for the undergraduate is elected to be the brand major of Jiangsu Province. Many students are with profound theoretical knowledge, strong practical ability and sense of innovation; many students have won awards in science and technology competitions in and outside China. Our graduates are generally well-praised by the employers.

Relying on the quality of our teaching staff, we have set up the Nanjing University Institute of Computer Software, National Key Laboratory of Computer Software New Technology (Nanjing University), Nanjing University Institute of computer application, Nanjing University Institute of Multi-media computational technology, Nanjing University Software Engineering Center (Jiangsu Research Center of Software Engineering), Nanjing University Institute of Information Security and other research institutions. The main directions of our scientific research are: formalization and automation of software, distributed and parallel computation and new networks, design of new programs and software design methodologies, multimedia and information processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, system software and information security. Since our construction 30 years ago, more than 300 programs, including the key science and Technology Program of 973 Project, 863 project, State Scaling Program, National Natural Sciences Fund, National science and technology key projects, and also research program of provinces, ministries and commissions, as well as research and development program commissioned by the enterprises or social institutions or international corporations.

Our research results have won more than 80 awards, including a first prize of the national Awards of Science and Technology Progress, 4 second prizes, three third prizes, two top prizes of provincial and ministerial Awards of Science and Technology Progress, 8 first prizes and 37 second prizes. We have issued over 3,000 articles, published more than 50 monographs and textbooks, applied for 33 national patents. Some results have been transformed into products, generating considerable social and economical benefits.

Our department keeps close tracking of the international academic forefront of the IT sector, pays great attention to international academic exchanges: we have established various forms of exchange and corporation relationship with universities, scientific research institutions and enterprises from more than 20 countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, India, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Portugal and from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions, the forms of which include academic exchange, joint research and development, joint training of graduate students. We have successfully held grand international academic conferences six times and national academic conference more than 10 times.

Our department has excellent conditions for teaching and research, including an experiment & teaching center of computer science, distributed computation laboratory, software automation laboratory, artificial intelligence laboratory, multimedia technology laboratory. The total area of Laboratory covers about 3,100 square meters, equipped with IBM RS/6000 SP2 parallel computer, HP Integrity rx5670 Cluster, and such small-sized computers as Sun HPC3000, IBM AS/400e, SGI Origin200, HP DS20E, such as Xiao Xingji, and more than 140 Taiwan IBM, Sun, SGI, HP, Dell servers and workstations, over 800 single PC desktops and portable machines, 2 Spirent network testers, 301 other experimental and teaching apparatus, also a Cisco high-speed wired / wireless LAN to access Internet. Besides there is also a Reading Room of more than 200 square meters, with storage of over 11,000 volumes of Chinese professional books, 18,000 volumes foreign-language professional books. We order more than 300 professional journals of both Chinese and foreign languages annually.

Since the beginning of computer industry in Nanjing University nearly 50 years ago, we have trained batch after batch of computer technology professionals. The rich history and the profound cultural background of Nanjing as the capital of six ancient dynasties, together with the outstanding style of study "Discipline Practicality diligence and Creativity" of a one hundred year old university, and also the solid work and striving of several generations of scholars enable her to occupy a crucial place in the history of China's computer development, despite the increasingly fierce competition of computer disciplines in domestic colleges.

Especially since the foundation of our department, the direction of our research adheres to the orientation of the forefront of science and technology and major national demand, and our personnel training adheres to the standard of being disciplined, practical and innovative, the construction of bases sticks to the policy of openness, mobility, coorporation and competition, the building of the contingent sticks to the guiding ideology of appropriate structure, capability and efficiency. By now, we have primarily constructed a domestically and internationally influential personnel training and scientific research base, covering a wide range of subjects, wit unique pattern to cultivate high-level professionals and scientific research, base construction and contingent construction promoting each other, also catering to the need of both international IT development and domestic economic and social development.
