UDLC (UNIVAC DATA LINK CONTROL) - Sperry-Univac (now UNISYS) version of a bit-oriented computer protocol based on the CCITT's HDLC.
UNATTENDED OPERATION - Transmission automatically controlled; not required a human operator to function.
UNIFORM CALL DISTRIBUTOR (UCD) - A device located at the telephone office or in a PABX which distributes incoming calls evenly among individuals; called a "call sequencer" in some non-Bell LECs.
UNIFORM-SPECTRUM RANDOM NOISE - The laboratory name for "white noise," a test signal made of noise that is constant in its power for every unit of bandwidth; used to test the crosstalk characteristics of multichannel analog transmission systems.
UNIVERSAL SERVICE ORDER CODE (USOC) - The information in coded form for billing purposes use by the local telephone company pertaining to information on service orders and service equipment records. Utterly anachronistic in its name as every operating company has wide differences in terminology.
UPLINK - That portion of a communications link reaching upward from the Earth to a satellite or airborne platform.
USASCII - The North American version of ASCII code; differences from CCITT International Telegraph Alphabet #5 are so minor as to be insignificant to most applications.
